CNN —Extraordinary global heat continues its streak. It marks 11 consecutive months of unprecedented global temperatures. With that new data point, some scientists warn there is a strong chance 2024 could beat 2023 as the warmest year on record. Global ocean heat in April was also record-breaking for the 13th consecutive month. And while heat records are still being set month after month, the margins at which they are being broken are smaller than they were in 2023.

The best strategy for tackling those moments of stress actually involves some preparation: Highly successful people get ahead of their unsteadiness with a key mindset shift, according to Lisa Feldman Barrett, a neuroscientist, author and psychology professor at Northeastern University. They don't see stress as something bad to be overcome, but instead as something natural that can be managed. Instead, she recommends doing exercises beforehand to practice doing what unnerves you, and to help train yourself to understand and handle the stress differently. "It's a shift from making the sensation go away to getting better at performing while I'm feeling the sensation," he said. I've been a college professor for 20 years, and I'm seeing more Gen X and Baby Boomer students. I no longer lecture to the class and instead let the older students take the lead. An increasing number of college students aren't kids anymore; they're older — many of whom are my generational peers. It's changed the way students learn and the way I teach. I quickly realized they learn differentlyI've noticed that older learners engage in ways that are different from traditional college students.

Food waste is so prolific in the U.S. that roughly one-third of the amount produced ends up in landfills rather than stomachs. A recent study published in the journal Science found food production accounts for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Food delivery services like HelloFresh, Blue Apron and EveryPlate reduce that somewhat by sending consumers what they need for specific recipes. The company says its processes help lead to 80% less food waste at its facilities compared with a traditional supermarket. After years of living in dorms and subpar apartments, Lisa Li could not wait to close on her new home. The one-bedroom condo in Miami’s financial district had a view of the river, was in a safe neighborhood and, Ms. Li heard, had neighbors who were much like her — less party, more chill. So Ms. Li, a 28-year-old who came to the United States 11 years ago as a college student from China, put in an offer, had her bid accepted and began ordering furniture. At the last minute, the title company raised concerns about a small United States Coast Guard outpost near South Beach a few miles away. Under the law, Ms. Li could face prison time, and the sellers and real estate agents could be held liable.

Invigorating growth is critical: When the economy expands, it improves standards of living, promotes innovation and makes households wealthier. Economic growth in Spain and France was stronger than expected last year. But the US is outperforming mainly for one key reason: Robust productivity growth. Productivity growth came in well below expectations in the first three months of the year, according to Labor Department data released last week. A “course correction” isn’t an even stronger US economy: Economic policymakers around the world need to address a range of key issues.

The unemployment rate for Black Americans fell in April, bucking the overall trend, according to data released Friday by the Department of Labor. Black Americans remain the racial group with the highest jobless percentage in the U.S., even after the group's unemployment rate dipped to 5.6% last month from 6.4% in March. Still, that's notable compared with the overall unemployment rate — which rose to 3.9% in April from 3.8% — and to the other racial demographics, which all saw their unemployment rates increase last month. White Americans saw their unemployment rate edge fractionally higher to 3.5% from 3.4%. The jobless rate for Asian and Hispanic workers, respectively, rose to 2.8% from 2.5%, and to 4.8% from 4.5%.

“Dissent is essential to democracy,” Mr. Biden said in brief comments at the White House. The president made clear he had no plans to change his Middle East policy because of the protests. Biden campaign advisers believe the issue is unlikely to significantly harm the president in the election. Students are leaving campus for summer break in the coming weeks, which many believe will help defuse some of the intensity of the protests. None of that stopped Republicans from pouncing on Mr. Biden’s comments.

Warning: this episode contains strong language. Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators. As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it. Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.

"One woman wanted to rent my office to work," remembers Lisa Slocum, the airport Fifth Third Bank branch manager. Capital One closed its branch at Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport in 2020, instead creating "airport lounges" for cardholders in Dulles, along with similar spots at airports in Denver and Dallas. Yet full-service airport bank branches are a relative rarity, surprising in a retail landscape that often resembles an upscale mall more than a terminal. Fifth Third BankWells Fargo operates a full-service branch in Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport, and according to a bank spokeswomen, has a multi-year relationship with the airport that involves both the branch and multiple ATMs throughout terminals. McAdam says ATMs and advanced-function kiosks are one thing, but a full-service branch, except maybe in the largest markets, is overkill.

A lower rate environment this year will boost the thesis for investing in emerging markets, according to Christine Phillpotts, a portfolio manager at Ariel Investments. Phillpotts, who manages Ariel's Emerging Markets Value and Emerging Markets Value ex-China strategies, told CNBC's Mike Santoli at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting that there are several reasons why emerging markets should outperform in 2024 and beyond. For starters, a lower interest rate environment would mean that investors would increase flows to ex-U.S. regions, including emerging markets. The portfolio manager noted that valuation discounts for emerging market equities are at all-time lows, based on a comparison of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index versus the S & P 500. For investors interested in artificial intelligence beneficiaries, Phillpotts highlighted that key opportunities in emerging markets lay within the picks-and-shovels plays that "will power the AI revolution."

Cracks might finally be forming in the Federal Reserve's firm hawkish stance, according to Fundstrat Global Advisors' Tom Lee. As investors expected, the Fed kept interest rates unchanged after central bank policymakers had their meeting. "That's not really an inflationary signal, so I think the bar is actually being lowered now for the Fed to cut and I think that's something many people picked up." All in all, Lee thinks there's a "good probability" that interest rates are currently at their peak. If inflation does indeed improve in the next few months and interest rates fall, he has optimistic prospects for stocks.
